Power of Work

The Power of Work program supports people with disabilities in locating employment or volunteer opportunities in their communities. Individuals are assisted with identifying their employment goals, employment preparation, job search and employment coaching. The Power of Work program currently operates in Edmonton and Grande Prairie.

Goodwill and Employment

  • Our pool of workers possess numerous skills and talents
  • Match employer needs with individual skill sets
  • Individual is supported by a job coach.
  • Goodwill is available for the duration of the individual’s employment.

The steps in the Power of Work program are as follows:

  • Define the individual’s employment goals and interests.
  • Provide them with or help them to locate any training and skills necessary to achieve their employment goal.
  • Assist them in the employment search.
  • Assist them in finding a placement that is a good fit for them.
  • Provide a range of support for individuals, while promoting the use of natural support sources in the workplace such as their supervisor or coworkers.

Our goal is to make sure these individuals are successful in their employment.

“They continue to stand as examples of employees who enjoy
their work, are successful in overcoming challenges,
and are appreciative of the opportunities. I think
it helps with morale for other employees, during the tougher
times, to see someone who really enjoys being here.”
Marty – Power of Work Employer about their seven employees

Employment Goals
When an individual starts the Power of Work program their employment goals and interests are assessed through a Person Centered Plan. This plan takes a comprehensive look at the individual’s aspirations and goals relating to employment and outlines the action needed to achieve them.

Employment Preparation
Individuals in the Power of Work program develop job skills through workshops, and work training placements tailored to their specific needs.

Job Search Assistance
Individuals in this program acquire the skills they need to find employment within the community, such as:

  • Resume and cover letter writing
  • Job search techniques
  • Interview techniques

“He is very proud of his pay check,
he is productive and it has given him a purpose,
he can buy the necessities of life.”
Roxanne Johnson - mother of Chris Johnson, Power of Work participant.

Employment Coaching

When an individual is successful in obtaining a position within the community, on-site support can be provided by a job coach to assist them in maintaining employment.

The job coach’s role is:

  • The orientation and initial training of the individual in their new position
  • Ensuring that the individual is performing the job to the employer’s specifications
  • Addressing any issues regarding accessibility, as well as quality of work
  • Promoting natural supports in an effort to gradually decrease on-site support as the individual becomes more independent in their work placement
