Wednesday, June 12 Goodwill celebrates the achievements of people with disabilities in Grande Prairie at our 17th Annual Goodness Greatness Awards night.

Each year, Goodwill honours the achievements of the people with disabilities in our programs, the employers and volunteer organizations that support our programs and the Goodwill employees that make it all happen.

In Grande Prairie, Goodwill helped 44 individuals achieve their employment goals in 2012. Our employment programs ensure these people are able to become independent in their employment and be strong, contributing members of the community. Goodwill also directly employs 11 individuals with disabilities in our Grande Prairie store and donation centre.

Goodwill Industries of Alberta is a social enterprise that provides training and jobs for Albertans with disabilities. Donations of gently-used household items are sold in our 11 retail stores to support employment programs throughout Alberta.  We currently have a retail store and donation centre that employs 19 people in Grande Prairie, in addition to our employment programs and services office that employs 10 people.

Goodwill employs over 500 Albertans with 20 per cent of our workforce having disclosed that they have a disability. In Grande Prairie, 55 per cent of our employees are individuals with disclosed disabilities.

This year, we will be honouring 15 outstanding individuals and companies that support Goodwill in the Grande Prairie region.

Across Alberta, we provide employment opportunities to another 200 individuals with disabilities and mental health issues through our programs.  Individuals from our Grande Prairie program are employed at businesses such as MaddHatters, Pat’s Autobody, Wholesale Sports, Petland, and Real Canadian Superstore.

In 2012, we received more than 500,000 donations from generous members of Alberta’s communities, created employment for more than 700 Albertans, and diverted more than 4 million kilograms of goods from Alberta landfills.

Awards Night is held on June 12 at 6:30 pm at the Stonebridge Hotel in Grande Prairie. Reception is held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the event runs from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
