  • Sixone and Goodwill Industries of Alberta

Sixone and Goodwill Industries of Alberta

    Press Release & Media Availability

Edmonton, AB Goodwill Industries of Alberta (“Goodwill”), a leader in environmental stewardship, is joining forces with Sixone Labs (“Sixone”), based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, an innovative technology company focused on textile-to-textile recycling. This strategic partnership is a significant step forward for the circular economy, and aims to redefine the future of textile recycling by integrating Sixone’s algorithmic recycling system into Goodwill’s donation operations, especially as we tackle polyester blend products donated to Goodwill from our wonderful donors throughout Alberta.

Through this collaboration, Goodwill will provide unsorted, post-consumer garments to Sixone to expand its molecular database and train its proprietary generative AI system for targeted recycling. Goodwill will use Sixone’s system to organize thousands of pounds of donated clothing that are unfit for resale, for Sixone to recycle and produce like-new polyester pellets for the textile industry. Currently, Goodwill diverts over 88% of all donated items from local landfills and this venture will further commit to reducing Goodwill’s environmental impact.

President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Alberta, Dale Monaghan, highlights how this project aligns with Goodwill’s Sustainability Action Plan, which highlights the importance of advancing the circular economy for textiles.

“People donate to Goodwill to make a positive impact. Whether it’s providing employment opportunities for those with disabilities or barriers, or to ensure their items are handled in a meaningful way to minimize waste in our communities.”

Dale Monaghan, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Alberta

Sixone brings its patented technology and expertise in post-consumer textile recycling to the partnership, creating a pathway for even the most complex blends of clothing to find a new life.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Goodwill, an institution synonymous with giving back and sustainability”, said Chris Wai, Co-founder & CEO at Sixone.

“Together, we’re transforming how challenging, post-consumer textile waste is handled and turning it into new products.”

Chris Wai, Co-founder & CEO at Sixone

Goodwill’s sustainability action plan is a practical guide that provides a road map of goals, areas of action and performance review tools, that integrates the values of sustainability into all areas of operations and services. Annually, Goodwill diverts more than 20million kg’s from landfills in Alberta and this strategic partnership with Sixone will create the opportunity to divert more.

  • THREE SPOOKY WAYS TO GET YOUR HOME HALLOWEEN READY

THREE SPOOKY WAYS TO GET YOUR HOME HALLOWEEN READY

It’s never too early to start decorating for a new season — especially for one as short as spooky season! It can take some time to get your home looking like the perfect balance of scary and stylish, so it’s no surprise that, for many, decorating has already begun.

Fall colors and Halloween-themed pumpkins come out of storage, fall-colored book stacks begin to appear on tables and shelves alongside gourds and witchy signage. It’s the unofficial start of the season, kicking off a celebration of all things Halloween — from candy to and mystical creatures.

Home décor has become more important in the last few months, as people have been forced to spend more and more time indoors. Even if this year’s Halloween looks a bit different — socially distanced gatherings and taking safety precautions while trick-or-treating instead of what may have normally been an indoor party — creating a fun spooky Halloween ambiance can have its own benefits for you and your family.

According to a study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, putting up decorations early for a favorite holiday can make people happier. By decorating early, you begin to believe the holiday isn’t that far away, and you can start a countdown to your favorite holiday!

Plus, if you want to go all-out on spooky Halloween decorations this year, you won’t need to break the bank. By shopping for decorations or DIY craft materials second hand at Goodwill, you’ll find what you need for a mere fraction of the price you’d pay at another retailer. And, at the same time, you’ll be paying tribute to the environment by diverting these gently used goods from a landfill, instead putting them in the spotlight on your walls and mantle.

Below are a few Halloween décor ideas created by Goodwill shoppers that will be sure to delight any ghost or ghoul this year.

    Witchy Welcome Wall

There’s nothing like a nice reminder of the Halloween season every time you walk through your front door. These thrifted entryway decorations are perfect for entering any witch or wizard into your home and will keep your family in the holiday spirit. You can repurpose an umbrella holder to hold witches’ brooms, both items easily findable at your local Goodwill.

    Creepy Corners

It can be a scary surprise to walk into the kitchen for a midnight snack and find a gleeful skeleton in the corner! Set up a few of these startling decorations throughout the house to add some hocus pocus to every room.

    Custom Cemetery DIY

I LOVED finding the creativity this Goodwill shopper had. She found the church on the left for a $3 steal at her local Goodwill and, with a little bit of black paint, transformed it into the creepy mausoleum that’s now part of the DIY cemetery stationed behind her kitchen sink. A spooktacularly wallet-friendly idea for an eye-catching and elaborate decoration!

    Pickleball for Beginners

The Easy, Thriftable Group-Friendly Halloween Costume To Ace Them All

Pickleball has taken Canada by storm this year as it has become the fastest growing sport in the country. Cities and towns are racing to install pickleball courts for residents and pickleball clubs have become more and more popular. A cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong, the game creates a fast paced and fun competition – as well as a cute and trendy costume.

    Picture1 4
    Pickleball for Beginners 18

You don’t have to go all out Sporty Spice to break out comfy athleisurewear this Halloween. Grabbing a group of friends, you can easily form the world’s cutest pickleball team. The best part about this easily thriftable DIY costume is that everything you wear for it can be repurposed – whether you play pickleball or not. You never know what you might find at your local Goodwill store, but sometimes it’s a pleasant surprise like the one I spotted at this Goodwill store.

There were racks and racks of Polo shirts in a range of colors, and so many of each shirt in different sizes – all new with tags! It was almost unnerving to look at the rack, which at quick glance looked like I was staring at a rack in a retail store. The difference could be found when I moved closer to the shirts and saw that while the retail store tag priced them at $109 each, the Goodwill tag priced them at $8.99. Score! So many people were in that section finding shirts in their size to take home. And at that price, which could be even lower if you go to Goodwill on a special discount day, you can create a more affordable Halloween costume for your friend group, or even your family.

    Picture4 2
    Pickleball for Beginners 19

Inspired by these polo shirts, I went over to the shorts section to find a pair of classic khakis. I was in luck because the pair I picked up were like new Brooks Brothers, a high quality brand. You can mix and match shirt and khakis, but if you’re planning to go trick-or-treating or to a Halloween party as a team, you may want to pull together a more cohesive ‘uniform’ look and stick with the same color all together.

    Picture2 4
    Pickleball for Beginners 20

Something a lot of people miss at Goodwill stores is that in addition to the racks, most Goodwill stores also have bins and shelves of other treasures. Not only can you find your Halloween outfit at Goodwill, but the accessories to go along with it. In this case, scan the shelves for things like matching visors and sweatbands, and don’t forget to pick up some pickleball paddles to complete the look! Have a fun thrifted DIY costume idea? The Importance of Applying

Scholarships are not merely financial aids; they are transformative opportunities that can shape the trajectory of a student’s academic journey and, indeed, their entire future. Here’s why applying for student scholarships is of paramount importance:

    1. Financial Relief: Scholarships provide financial assistance that can alleviate the burden of tuition fees, accommodation costs, textbooks, and other educational expenses. By securing scholarships, students can mitigate the need for extensive loans and debt, easing the financial strain on themselves and their families.
    2. Merit Recognition: Scholarships are often awarded based on academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, leadership potential, or specific talents. When a student receives a scholarship, it serves as a validation of their hard work and dedication. It recognizes their accomplishments and encourages them to continue striving for excellence.
    3. Access to Opportunities: Scholarships open doors to opportunities that might otherwise remain inaccessible.
    4. Reduced Academic Stress: Financial worries can significantly impact a student’s academic performance and overall well-being. By securing scholarships, students can focus more on their studies and extracurricular pursuits without the constant stress of financial instability. This, in turn, fosters a conducive environment for learning and personal development.
    5. Building a Stronger Resume: Scholarships bolster a student’s resume and academic profile, making them more competitive candidates for future opportunities.
    6. Empowerment and Independence: By actively seeking and applying for scholarships, students cultivate essential skills such as research, writing, time management, and perseverance. This empowerment fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance that will serve them well beyond their academic years.

Beyond the financial benefits, scholarships empower students, recognize their achievements, and unlock a world of opportunities. After all, the next scholarship application could be the key that unlocks a brighter future.

  • Spring Cleaning and Donating to Goodwill

Spring Cleaning and Donating to Goodwill

As the winter chill begins to loosen its grip, the arrival of spring brings a sense of renewal and rejuvenation. It’s the perfect time to declutter, organize, and embrace a fresh start. One meaningful way to do this is through spring cleaning, not just for your living space but also for your community.

Your donations to Goodwill aren’t just about clearing out space; they’re about giving people in the community the opportunity to start new lives. Our programs are designed to help individuals build skills, find jobs, and grow their careers.

Your donations to Goodwill mean employment for those with disabilities.

    Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

    1. The Joy of Decluttering: Spring cleaning isn’t just about getting rid of dust and grime; it’s an opportunity to declutter and create a more organized and harmonious living environment. Begin by assessing each room, sorting through belongings, and deciding what to keep, toss, or donate. Letting go of items that no longer serve a purpose can be liberating and make space for positive energy.
    2. Take an Inventory: Make a list of what you have in your spring wardrobe, make a list of what you need and donate the items you no longer use and shop at your local Goodwill for your spring fashions.
    3. Environmental Impact: Choosing to donate rather than discard items has a positive impact on the environment. By extending the life cycle of your belongings through donation, you reduce the overall waste in landfills. In fact, 90% of items donated to Goodwill are re-sold or re-purposed, diverting them from our local landfills. This eco-friendly approach aligns with the spirit of spring, promoting sustainability and responsible living.
    4. Supporting the Community: When you donate to Goodwill in Alberta, you contribute to a noble cause. Goodwill operates with a mission of providing jobs and job training programs for those with disabilities or barriers. It’s all about finding dignity and joy through meaningful employment. Your unwanted items can become valuable resources for others seeking affordable goods.
    5. The Goodwill Experience in Alberta: Goodwill Industries of Alberta plays a crucial role in building a stronger community. With over 30 donation centres across the province, Goodwill offers a convenient way for Albertans to contribute to the well-being of their neighbours. From clothing and furniture to electronics and household items, Goodwill accepts a wide range of gently used items.
    6. How to Donate: Donating to Goodwill in Alberta is a straightforward process. Gather your gently used items, ensuring they are clean and in good condition. Locate the nearest Goodwill donation center or drop-off location in your area. Many sites have designated bins or staff members ready to assist you in unloading your donations.
    7. Encouraging Others to Join: Spring cleaning and donating to Goodwill in Alberta can be a collective effort. Encourage friends, family, and neighbors to participate in this uplifting activity. Consider organizing a community donation drive to amplify the positive impact on those in need.

    Learning Job Skills

While participating in the Repair for Good program, volunteers are supported by talented and passionate artisan educators at Goodwill. The mentors guiding our volunteers have an extensive background related to woodworking and artistic design, as well as a burning desire to provide people with barriers and disabilities with a newfound sense of joy.

The Repair for Good program has proven to aid our volunteers in the process of creating a path towards finding purposeful employment, as well as extending the lifecycle of roughly 60% of broken furniture donations.

Decluttering & donating with your little festive friend!

It’s that time of year when Santa’s little elf friend returns from the North Pole for a month of shenanigans and no good throughout your house. We know it can be challenging to come up with new ideas for your little jolly pal’s adventures, so we’re here to offer an idea, turning the no in ‘no good’ into a heartwarming opportunity for GOOD. This year, let your mischievous elf embark on a mission of kindness by collecting things for donation to Goodwill. It’s a twist on the traditional antics, encouraging your child to think about giving and let’s be honest…decluttering!

    How it works

Place your merry little minion with a box or bag and print off the card above, or grab one at any of our retail locations (while supplies lasts). Encourage your children to make a little extra space in their rooms, by having them go through and collect items they might no longer be using, have out gown or have seen better days. The next time you’re out and about, swing by one of out many donation centres where our Goodwill elves will be happy to accept your donation. All donations to Goodwill have an impact on our mission of supporting Albertans with disabilities to find and gain meaningful employment.
