Sixone and Goodwill Industries of Alberta

Edmonton, AB – Goodwill Industries of Alberta (“Goodwill”), a leader in environmental stewardship, is joining forces with Sixone Labs (“Sixone”), based out of Vancouver, British Columbia, an innovative technology company focused on textile-to-textile recycling. This strategic partnership is a significant step forward for the circular economy, and aims to redefine the future of textile recycling by integrating Sixone’s algorithmic recycling system into Goodwill’s donation operations, especially as we tackle polyester blend products donated to Goodwill from our wonderful donors throughout Alberta.
Through this collaboration, Goodwill will provide unsorted, post-consumer garments to Sixone to expand its molecular database and train its proprietary generative AI system for targeted recycling. Goodwill will use Sixone’s system to organize thousands of pounds of donated clothing that are unfit for resale, for Sixone to recycle and produce like-new polyester pellets for the textile industry. Currently, Goodwill diverts over 88% of all donated items from local landfills and this venture will further commit to reducing Goodwill’s environmental impact.

It’s never too early to start decorating for a new season — especially for one as short as spooky season! It can take some time to get your home looking like the perfect balance of scary and stylish, so it’s no surprise that, for many, decorating has already begun.

Home décor has become more important in the last few months, as people have been forced to spend more and more time indoors. You can repurpose an umbrella holder to hold witches’ brooms, both items easily findable at your local Goodwill.

I LOVED finding the creativity this Goodwill shopper had. She found the church on the left for a $3 steal at her local Goodwill and, with a little bit of black paint, transformed it into the creepy mausoleum that’s now part of the DIY cemetery stationed behind her kitchen sink. A spooktacularly wallet-friendly idea for an eye-catching and elaborate decoration!

Pickleball for Beginners
The Easy, Thriftable Group-Friendly Halloween Costume To Ace Them All
Pickleball has taken Canada by storm this year as it has become the fastest growing sport in the country. Cities and towns are racing to install pickleball courts for residents and pickleball clubs have become more and more popular. A cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong, the game creates a fast paced and fun competition – as well as a cute and trendy costume.
Pickleball for Beginners 36 You don’t have to go all out Sporty Spice to break out comfy athleisurewear this Halloween. Grabbing a group of friends, you can easily form the world’s cutest pickleball team. The best part about this easily thriftable DIY costume is that everything you wear for it can be repurposed – whether you play pickleball or not. You never know what you might find at your local Goodwill store, but sometimes it’s a pleasant surprise like the one I spotted at this Goodwill store.
There were racks and racks of Polo shirts in a range of colors, and so many of each shirt in different sizes – all new with tags! It was almost unnerving to look at the rack, which at quick glance looked like I was staring at a rack in a retail store. The difference could be found when I moved closer to the shirts and saw that while the retail store tag priced them at $109 each, the Goodwill tag priced them at $8.99. Score! So many people were in that section finding shirts in their size to take home. And at that price, which could be even lower if you go to Goodwill on a special discount day, you can create a more affordable Halloween costume for your friend group, or even your family.
Pickleball for Beginners 37 Inspired by these polo shirts, I went over to the shorts section to find a pair of classic khakis. I was in luck because the pair I picked up were like new Brooks Brothers, a high quality brand. You can mix and match shirt and khakis, but if you’re planning to go trick-or-treating or to a Halloween party as a team, you may want to pull together a more cohesive ‘uniform’ look and stick with the same color all together.
Pickleball for Beginners 38 Something a lot of people miss at Goodwill stores is that in addition to the racks, most Goodwill stores also have bins and shelves of other treasures. Not only can you find your Halloween outfit at Goodwill, but the accessories to go along with it. In this case, scan the shelves for things like matching visors and sweatbands, and don’t forget to pick up some pickleball paddles to complete the look! Have a fun thrifted DIY costume idea? Fashion takes a bold new direction as Goodwill presents: Denim Redefined, a fashion show dedicated to sustainability and inclusivity, prepares to showcase upcycled denim creations made by local Calgary designers.
Scheduled for Friday August 16th from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. at Brookfield Place Plaza (225 6 Ave SW), in downtown Calgary, this innovative event marks a significant milestone in the fashion industry’s journey towards diversity and environmental consciousness. Curated by Goodwill Industries of Alberta, Denim Redefined brings together a coalition of local designers committed to pushing the boundaries of traditional fashion norms. By focusing on sustainable practices and embracing inclusivity, these designers aim to redefine beauty standards and inspire a new era of conscious consumerism.
Denim Redefined 41 The models for this show consist of people from various Goodwill Industries of Alberta Mission focused programs, including Career Connections, Opportunity Accelerator, and Goodwill @ Work. There are also models from Kello Inclusive, a modeling agency that focuses on representing people with disabilities.
Goodwill invites fashion enthusiasts, industry professionals, and advocates for inclusivity and sustainability to join us for this groundbreaking event! Together, we can support local talent, celebrate diversity, and pave the way for a more equitable and eco-conscious future.

Thrifty adventures, buckle up for an unforgettable ride! The Thrifting Bus Tour is BACK by popular demand in Edmonton and Calgary!
We are taking dedicated thrifters across each city to various thrift stores to shop until they drop in style!
Thrift Bus Tour 2023 August 17, National Thrift Shop Day is celebrated across North America annually. To mark the occasion, Goodwill is hosting the Goodwill Thrift Party Tour Bus touring across the cities of Calgary and Edmonton from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.
With multiple stops, shoppers will have time to visit Goodwill locations across the city, experience a private BIN Shopping excursion and a private lunch. In Edmonton, there is an additional location to visit More Than a Fad Thrift store, as we celebrate all non-profit second-hand stores on National Thrift Shop Day.
This is a FULL day of thrifting, with transportation provided so you can sit back and relax between stops. There will be special goodies at each stop, interactive games and a whole lot more!

Q – Where do I put my the items that I purchased?
A – We will be providing a second vehicle to transport all purchased items and we will ensure all items are clearly marked.Q – What should I bring?
A – We encourage you to bring your own re-useable shopping bags (multiple), money (amount is up to you), ID, water and snacks. We will be providing lunch, the limo party bus transportation, snacks, beverages, interactive games and some cool prizes during your ride.Q – What is the day like?
A – When you arrive at the first Goodwill location, you will be greeted and signed in with our Goodwill staff. You be given credentials and an itinerary for the day. At each location you will have approximately 45 minutes to shop and purchase your items. We’ll have Goodwill representatives travelling along, to ensure we’re adhering to our schedule. At the Impact Centres, we will have a VIP lunch experience, followed by the Outlet Store shopping experience. On the trip, there will also be photographers/videographers capturing the fun-filled experience. Pick-up and drop off will be at the same location.Q – What does the $15 include?

Repair for GOOD now in Calgary!
Repair for GOOD is an award-winning program, taking broken and discarded furniture and turning it into one-of-a-kind centerpieces for your home! You can find these special pieces of furniture at Goodwill retail locations such as:

- Calgary Goodwill Plaza
Through Repair for GOOD, we have the ability to repair and upcycle un-usable furniture and re-selling the items at an affordable price to our customers. Our community of partners (like ATB Financial) and customers have given us tremendous support in donating supplies, referring volunteers, and buying the beautiful pieces we’ve upcycled.
Repair for Good – how it works, who it supports How the Program Works
- People donate broken or discarded furniture to Goodwill donation sites.
- These items are transported to the Goodwill Impact Centre (in Calgary and Edmonton) where our team assesses and begins the planning of refurbishing.
- Furniture is then repaired and upcycled by a dedicated group of volunteers and those with disabilities trying to gain experience in the field of carpentry.
- Repairs include using environmentally friendly paint and supplies.
- The finished pieces are then transferred to a Goodwill retail store to be sold.
- Proceeds support our mission of helping those with a disability or barrier to find and gain meaningful employment.
Repair for GOOD 61 Learning Job Skills
While participating in the Repair for Good program, volunteers are supported by talented and passionate artisan educators at Goodwill. The mentors guiding our volunteers have an extensive background related to woodworking and artistic design, as well as a burning desire to provide people with barriers and disabilities with a newfound sense of joy.
The Repair for Good program has proven to aid our volunteers in the process of creating a path towards finding purposeful employment, as well as extending the lifecycle of roughly 60% of broken furniture donations.
