Located just south of Glenmore Trail, this retail space has ample parking and will make your Goodwill experience one to remember.

For those of you who enjoy shopping, donating, and volunteering at the current Willow Park Macleod Trail store, you’ll appreciate the new location even more. The customer experience is enhanced by our improved operations.

This is a victory for everyone who visits Goodwill. When Goodwill grows, the organization can provide more opportunities for Albertans with disabilities. So let’s Giddy up!

We hope to see you at our newest store, Goodwill Plaza, on Saturday July 17th. Remember, with every donation and every retail purchase, you help us connect Albertans with disabilities to meaningful employment.

    Give Goods. For Good.

You donate, Albertans with disabilities work.

Every day, Goodwill strengthens families and communities through the power of work and the dignity of a job. Our award winning social enterprise changes lives for the better AND diverts millions of kilograms of waste from local landfills each year.

During this year’s spring clean, when you are straightening up your closets consider Goodwill. You can donate your unwanted clothing and used household goods to make a difference in the lives of Albertans with disabilities.

Your old clothes can be someone’s bright future, so please make a difference in a real person’s life today by donating to Goodwill!

    Good Looks. For Good.

Boot cut jeans are making a comeback and so are those vintage, 1970’s popped collared dress shirts. So why pay full price for a “vintage look” when you can find the real deal at your local Goodwill.

There isn’t just one look either, as you can be whoever you want to be. You just have to use your imagination.

One day, you’ll be able to walk the red carpet at the Oscars, while the next day you’re getting all your gear ready for the ‘Battle of Alberta’ figuring out which side you’ll be going for. Will you be blue and orange or will you be red and yellow? The choices define us and make us feel good in the process.

Re-introduce to the world, mom’s old sunglasses, or dad’s old bow tie. You’ll stand out from the crowd and have more money afterwards to splurge on something else. Plus you’re making a difference, as 89 cents of every dollar spent at Goodwill goes towards programs that help those who need help the most. This is a win-win situation, because you’ll be doing a lot GOOD in your community.

Feel good. Look good. Be good. Spread the Goodwill.

  • The Goodwill Volunteer Hub

    The Goodwill Volunteer Hub

Volunteer placements are in a holding pattern or they’ve been outright cancelled since the pandemic began last year. This left many people within our Career Connections division without a place to contribute back to the community.

Goodwill’s Job Development Team took this challenge head-on and created “The Goodwill Volunteer Hub.”

This Volunteer Hub is based out of Goodwill’s Career Connections training facility on Whyte Ave. in Edmonton.

Here, individuals with disabilities assemble and create different ‘kits’ to help spread the GOOD vibes throughout our region.

It began with creating kits for disadvantaged people in the community (in partnership with the United Way). Different groups benefit from these kits and the packages range from:

    • A children’s literacy kit
    • A senior’s activity kit
    • A pencil case kit
    • A Thank You card to frontline workers

    Other assembled kits include:

    • Share the GOOD packages to stimulate local business

Albertans’ with disabilities assemble all items, creating dignity and joy through the power of work!

Assembly options are endless as this hub is a platform for volunteerism and community engagement.

We welcome this community engagement because of the challenges before us. As a result, when faced with CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES  abound!

  • Staying organized (and sane!) this holiday season!

Staying organized (and sane!) this holiday season!

Tips and Tricks from a Professional Organizer

    What is Functional Spaces?

The 2020 holiday season is here at last! A bright and glittering spot in a year that has challenged us. Even if in-person gatherings may look a little different this year, most of us have opted in for as much decorating and gift-giving as possible.

As we bring new items into our homes, this is a fantastic time to declutter what we no longer use and organize the belongings we do. We want to optimize the sense of peace during the holiday season.

    Realistic Goals

The first step is setting a goal and being realistic with the time frame. Tackle your home, room by room. Taking it all on at once will only overwhelm and discourage you.

Which room do you envision being the centre of the holidays – is it preparing food together in the kitchen? Or maybe gathering around the living area with music or games? Start there.

If you feel short on time (maybe your work is busiest at this time of the year), just set a timer and do a two-hour declutter session on a Saturday morning. Make that goal small and doable, such as the entryway or a linen closet. Do your best to stay focused on the area you choose so you can enjoy the sense of accomplishment when you achieve your goal!

Consider moving non-essential or out-of-season items – summer clothing or extra books, for example – into garage or basement storage so that they’re tucked out of the way during the holiday season.

    christmas tree ornaments box
A box of Christmas ornaments on a green cloth

    Storing Items

When you’re storing items, stash them in appropriate bins and, most importantly, label them. Kids’ toys or extra books can likely go in clear containers, while things you want to keep private can go in opaque or solid-coloured bins. Not all bins are created equal.

    Goodwill

What do you do with the stuff you no longer need but is in good usable condition? Bring it to your local Goodwill donation centre! Goodwill is a community-driven non-profit that, in 2019 alone, diverted nearly 16 million kilograms of waste from landfills. Your items get a second life, we help strengthen our communities by creating employment for Albertans with disabilities.

Happy organizing, everyone! Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season.

    -Mélanie xo (From Functional Spaces)

“It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress!”

  • UPDATED Store Hours

    UPDATED Store Hours

To help curb the spread of COVID-19 and keeping in mind the health and safety of our employees, volunteers, shoppers, donors and partners, we are reducing the retail hours of operation.

    Hours Change

Stores will open at 10am and close at 7pm right across the province effective immediately.

This is an important step to protect those who matter most to us, both mentally and physically. COVID-19 is a real threat to our community and we must do our part to help those most vulnerable.

Thank you so much for helping our organization through this difficult time. Our shoppers, donors and Albertans everywhere continue to make a difference in the lives of so many. Helping those with disabilities find and gain meaningful employment.

Give the GOOD on Giveback Tuesday

Edmonton AB (November 30, 2020) – Sometimes things just don’t go to plan. This sums up 2020 in a single sentence. Like other organizations throughout the world, we have had to adjust, maneuver and change. This has been the case for our retail stores, donation centres and our programs to help those with a disability to find meaningful employment.

December 1st, 2020 is Giveback Tuesday and once again our organization had to pivot from our original plans. Goodwill was planning on rolling out the blue carpet to greet our donors with a custom song from local musicians and creating a celebratory day for the thousands of Albertans who support Goodwill with their generosity.

With COVID-19 mandates in place from the Provincial Government, the health and well-being of our staff members, shoppers and donors are at the forefront. This celebration would not have been appropriate as health and safety come first.

For Giveback Tuesday we are still honouring those who support our mission by doing something a bit different!

    Goodwill Round UP

We have started a program for those who would like to support our mission even more so with Goodwill Round UP.

    Handout Back Side

At checkout, you have the opportunity to Round UP your purchase to the nearest dollar.

Every cent you donate through our Round UP program will go directly towards our mission. This adds to the 89 cents of every dollar you’ve already donated by shopping in our stores. This means more resources to help Albertans with disabilities train; find; and gain, meaningful employment.

    Give the GOOD

We are also looking for ten lucky individuals who have the chance to receive Thank You packages from Goodwill for supporting our organization this time of the year. We want you to help “Give the GOOD” by nominating your friend, neighbour or family member for this wonderful package with amazing items inside!

Simply go online by visiting our Facebook page or Instagram page and tell us why the person you nominate should receive this great package. We’ll take care of the rest!

While we are a recipient of Giveback Tuesday, we are giving back to everyone who has supported us in 2020.

Since 1963, Goodwill has been changing lives for the better through the power of work and the dignity and of a job.

Arctic Narwhal Tusk donated to Goodwill finds permanent educational home at the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary

Calgary, AB (October 20, 2020) – Since 1963, Goodwill Industries of Alberta has been thankful to many supporters, from shoppers to donors, to volunteers. Throughout the years, our organization has received many unique donations to support our mission of helping those with disabilities through the power of work.

Last month, was no exception, as a generous donor donated something so unique and rare, we knew that it had have a home where it would be well represented within the community. It was an ivory tusk from a Narwhal whale in Canada’s Arctic regions.

    DSC 8511 min
    Photograph Courtesy of Hesam Rezaei

The tusk came with hunting tag that dates back to 1978 and is about 24 inches in length.  For centuries in Inuit communities, narwhals have provided food for those in the Arctic and have supplied materials for day-to-day living. The narwhal hunt is significant as it provides both food and income, particularly in isolated Arctic communities, where employment opportunities are very scarce for families involved in hunting.  Items like these are a fundamental part of Indigenous Culture and History and must be preserved.

As a social enterprise, we are thankful of the donation to help the betterment of our community in Alberta, and are looking to honour the tusk’s cultural significance. After speaking with multiple local organizations, Goodwill is pleased to announce that the tusk will be given to the Arctic Institute of North America, located at the University of Calgary, who is committed to preserving the tusk’s historical and cultural integrity.

“This is a way to create an educational opportunity in our community based on historical, environmental, and cultural significance. We are proud to work with the Arctic Institute of North America to feature higher learnings of what the Narwhal means to those living in the Arctic.” says Goodwill Industries of Alberta CEO Dale Monaghan.

    Shannon Black
Photograph Courtesy of Jim Wells, Postmedia

The artifact will create a better learning opportunity about this history of our great white North.

Narwhals are a Canadian treasure! They are a highly intelligent small whale species which only exists in the Arctic, and considerably more than half the existing number of animals (estimated at ~120,000 adult animals by the IUCN Redlist) are found in Canadian waters.” Says Dr. Sandie Black, Associate Clinical Professor of Veterinary Medicine and Head Veterinary at the Calgary Zoo. “In Canada, our collective actions in managing Arctic development sustainably, and in safeguarding the marine Arctic will determine their future.”

A hand-off of the Narwhal tusk will take place in a closed celebration, as both organizations continue to practice safe measures during COVID-19.

Recap: Goodwill’s LIVE Virtual Fashion Show

After adapting to the restrictions and guidelines regarding public safety in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Goodwill had to be creative and innovative when it came to hosting events this year. With the help of Zoom, Goodwill’s first-ever Live Virtual Fashion Show was a smashing success! Local thrift experts from across the province turned their houses into catwalks while people from all over the world tuned in.

    Jocy Outfit
Jocy McCormack, who goes by the instagram handle ojoshi, describes her style as laid back and hip, utilizing bold statement pieces and accessories to make her outfits pop.

The thrifting experts purchased and styled thrifted outfits found Goodwill stores from around the province.  Bringing their own unique style and flare, looks ranged from eclectic casual streetwear to 90’s glam with touches of feminine accents. The experts also shared their tips and tricks on how they style and shop for items at Goodwill. Described as “feel good” fashion, people shop thrift for different personal reasons, including supporting the social greater good, like Goodwill’s mission of helping Albertans with disabilities to find and gain meaningful employment, as well as to shift towards sustainable fashion.

Mel Mathison of @YYCthriftguide on instagram focuses on sustainable fashion – vowing to purchase and reuse thrifted and used clothing for an entire 366! She shared more details about her adventure of #NoNewClothes during the show below

Thrifting expert Mel (who can be found at @ThriftyYYC on Instagram) is so committed to sustainability that the Mom is not purchasing new clothing for an entire 366 days! Instead Mel is focused on shopping for thrifted and used pieces, utilizing pieces already in existence within her closet to create new outfits every day.

For Sydney, Goodwill is one of her favourite places to shop not only because of the value in prices but in supporting Goodwill’s mission of helping Albertans with disabilities find and gain meaningful employment. The teen herself has cerebral palsy and is honoured to be an advocate for persons with disabilities.

While there is a stigma that thrifted clothes can be unstylish, viewers left the show inspired to create their own thrifted outfits and to head to their local Goodwill to shop thrifted, “feel good” fashion.

For those who missed the live show, a recorded version can be found and viewed below.

With the success of the first ever virtual fashion and viewers requesting for more, Goodwill is pleased to announce that another virtual show is in the works – stay tuned for more details! Hint: It’ll be holiday themed!
