    Making a Positive Impact

The Amazing Edmonton Impact Centre and Outlet Store

Since 2017, the Goodwill Impact Centre and Outlet Store has gone from 14 employees to over 50 — and with that growth comes a greener province.

    CBC Edmonton Story

“This is the amazing Edmonton Impact Centre and it’s a one of a kind in Western Canada… It basically just gives items an opportunity at a second chance at a new home,” manager of marketing Doug Roxburgh said.

Instead of seeing thousands of unpurchased items end up in the dump, a great effort is put forward to restore them.

“We initiated the sustainability action plan where we take T-shirts [and] towels and we upcycle them into cleaning cloths. We take broken furniture and upcycle them and repurpose them, refurbish them to amazing pieces you can take home and use in your kitchen, in your house, in your living room,” Roxburgh said.

It’s an initiative that has resonated with customers and has created a unique thrift experience.

Where shoppers see affordable shoes, furniture and household items, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Alberta Dale Monaghan, sees a “dream and vision for a centre of excellence.”

“We’re offering sustainability, environmental stewardship and unprecedented job training for Albertans with disabilities,” says Monaghan.

    Our Edmonton 11

Thirty per cent of Goodwill Alberta’s 800 workers report having some form of disability.

    Sustainability Action Plan

Goodwill Alberta is setting records at all levels and is eyeing expansion into Calgary, hoping to add an impact centre within two years. The dream of bringing a facility like this to Calgary has happened because of the amazing success in Edmonton.

For three decades the Alberta Emerald Foundation has been recognizing green initiatives and executive director Gregory Caswell believes the Edmonton Impact Centre has raised the bar for environmental practices in the industry.

    61

Mortimer Capriles, Director of Sustainability and innovation for Goodwill Alberta, loves to see shoppers coming through the doors.

“When you buy here, you’re automatically diverting these items from the landfill and that is why this is such a great concept that we have in place in Edmonton.”

But if the bargain hunters don’t snap the items up, Capriles points to the centre’s robust recycle, reuse, repurpose operation.

“Ninety per cent of the items we receive at the Impact Centre are being diverted from the landfill and we’re really proud of that fact,” he said.

    A Unique Thrifting Experience

Items are put out every 25 minutes, and products that go unsold will go into Goodwill’s Sustainability Action Plan — a cycle of recycling Goodwill hopes will have a positive impact for Edmontonians and the environment.

Almost everything at the centre is sold by weight with a pound costing a $1.95 up to 50 pounds with the price getting cheaper with the more you buy.

  • Back To School Outfit Staples That Make Dressing To Impress That Much Easier

Back To School Outfit Staples That Make Dressing To Impress That Much Easier

As Labor Day swiftly approaches, it’s time to start thinking about the inevitable. The end of lazy summer days and the start of classes. Before heading back to school, I would always make sure to plan my first few days of outfits. Especially for college students, whose schedules and professors are different each day of the week, it’s important to make a great first impression and look the part of an ambitious eager-to-learn student every day of syllabus week..

For unique style inspiration, I love heading to my favorite Goodwill stores and thrift shopping. It’s amazing to see how the sight of one unique piece of clothing can spark the idea of an entire outfit, which will be the source of compliments and conversation starters as you head back into the world of networking and making new friends. Plus, I love how each purchase you make at Goodwill goes directly to helping others in the community. Not only do you get some really great pieces for prices your wallet loves, but the amount you pay helps out others who need it as well.

The photos below have a few of my favorite back to school looks, that are easy to put together and can be worn all throughout the fall. I love cozy fall looks that incorporate creative layers and mix end of summer attire with fall statement pieces.

    1. Colored Denim

    4

It always amazes me to see how quickly on the first cool night people start breaking out  the denim jackets. It’s almost as if they spend the summer craving denim jacket season and when the first inkling of fall arrives the jackets can all come out of hibernation. Whether you’re a denim jacket aficionado or not, one look I’m loving this fall is colored denim. Bring a chic fall take on this staple piece, like the burnt orange colored jacket in the picture. It’s the perfect way to transition the summer dress into a fall look, while also keeping you warm at the same time. I also love the fall contrast the slouchy velvet shoulder bag brings to the look as well. Plus, it’s large enough to hold a laptop and notebook, which is perfect for toting everything to and from class.

    1. Layered Dresses

    5

The layered dress, overall and jumpsuit look is going to be big again this fall. It’s the essential collegiate look for back to school, because it’s comfy and takes just a few seconds to curate from your closet. Whether you choose to go with a classic black and white look like in the photo, or you choose layers with pops of color, it just takes two steps to look really put together with an outfit like this one – which I know will come in handy for those with early class or work schedules! If you want to dress to impress without the hassle of coordinating an entire outfit, this should be your go-to look this fall, paired with slide-on loafers or low-heeled mules.

  • 3 Stress-Free Back To School Outfit Hacks To Help Busy Teachers Dress To Impress

3 Stress-Free Back To School Outfit Hacks To Help Busy Teachers Dress To Impress

Most teachers make their jobs look easy. In reality, helping hundreds of children and young adults grow both in their studies and as people is no easy feat. It takes up hours out of the day that go beyond the classroom. Creating lesson plans and grading tests can’t be done during class time, and neither can coming in before school starts or staying later to help students get a better grasp on the material.

As with any profession, when work starts to encroach on personal time, any time saving hacks can be a saving grace. When it comes to a signature wardrobe, that’s where teachers can save time and eliminate the stress of emptying out a full closet while claiming one has nothing to wear. Just imagine a morning where you reach into your closet and pull out just a few go-to wardrobe staples that essentially become the work uniform of your choosing.

Once you have a few items that make you feel comfortable, confident and ready to tackle the day, then you can worry about accessorizing – if time allows. Below I’m showing how you can turn a few neutral pieces into a week’s worth of outfits. And remember, you don’t need to break the bank on your back to school wardrobe. Go through the items already in your closet and be honest with yourself about what you reach for most often. Anything you haven’t worn in the last three months you might want to consider donating to your local Goodwill®. And while you’re there, take some time to browse through the racks. I’ve found many cardigans there that are perfect to brighten up any outfit!

    1. Wardrobe Staples

    1

You can never go wrong with a classic color combination. Black and white is a chic go-to that is incredibly easy to match, making outfit planning extra convenient. With a few pairs of comfortable yet stylish black pants you can create a great variety of looks. Check out the outfit in the look above. A simple pair of black pants and a white collared shirt can be pulled on in just a few minutes, while making an overall put together effect.

    1. Pops Of Color

    2

Want to add a bit of color to the basics? Consider investing in some bright colored cardigans. I love this pink cardigan (and have seen many others like it in a variety of colors at my favorite Goodwill store in New York City!). The 3/4 sleeves make it perfect to wear in any season – including in buildings that like to blast the air conditioner. I have the same cardigan in pink and blue and am on the lookout for one in an emerald green as well.

    1. Embellished Details

    3

To add some extra flair to your favorite pair of pants, think of adding some embellished details. It could be a fun DIY project and you can sew or take a strong glue gun to the beads and pearls to add them on. You also might be surprised at the fun finds you’ll come across at your local Goodwill. There’s always a designer surprise in the racks and all you have to do is find it.

  • A Feel Good Moment – Elaine Wenger

A Feel Good Moment – Elaine Wenger

Elaine Wenger began working at Goodwill 43 years ago and in August she is finally ready to hang up her jacket. Born with a disability, Wenger is an inspiration to those who look to gain meaningful employment and a symbol of how Goodwill Industries of Alberta can help those find a purpose through the power of work.

    Elaine

Canada Manpower helped Wenger get started at Goodwill in 1976 and has since worked at various Goodwill locations in and around the Edmonton region. During this time, she has been able to support her two kids going through post-secondary education and has been part of the growth of Goodwill in Alberta. Not an easy task for someone with a disability working in retail.

“If I can do it, so can you. Don’t let anything ever stop you from doing what you want to do.”

Wenger first started in in sorting and then went to ironing. She evolved as a worker and when she was working downtown Edmonton, her favourite job involved making cookies and muffins for the staff. Currently Wenger is working as a merchandiser at our SouthPark location on Calgary Trail NW.

Wenger will retire in August and is looking forward to spending more time with her family.

Elaine’s story of perseverance, commitment and dedication help illustrate how one can overcome obstacles and how we as people all strive for purpose. This is why Goodwill is proud to help those with disabilities and those who need assistance in finding their purpose.

  • How To Outfit Your Dorm Room Like A Pro

How To Outfit Your Dorm Room Like A Pro

The new semester is coming closer and the shopping list for furnishing your new student digs is growing longer and longer. The biggest problem? Being a student means being on a tight budget! You can’t afford to blow your student loan outfitting your new apartment when you also have that long reading list to pay for. Luckily, your local Goodwill store has all the supplies to get you #backtoschool within budget.

To outfit your new dorm room here is your essential guide to thrifting like a pro at Goodwill.

    1. Start with the kitchen

You can get yourself a whole matching set of plates and dishes if that’s your style, or you can choose to mix and match it. Either way, you’ll be getting bulk for a bargain when it comes to pans, cups, and glasses (and anything else you can imagine for the kitchen). So, while you’re getting to know your new neighbors, you won’t need to worry about a plate getting chipped or someone borrowing your bowl for their cereal!

    1. Get the gadgets

The cost of kitchen appliances can add up when you’re filling a new place from scratch. Goodwill always has a range of small kitchen appliances from the standard toasters and kettles to the more exciting popcorn machines and waffle makers. What better way to become everyone’s best friend than by owning a coffee maker and cooking waffles for breakfast?!
    pietro de grandi 198069 unsplash

    1. Fuel up on coffee

Speaking of coffee, we’ve got that sorted as well. All that late night studying will get you gasping for a cup of joe in the morning. Whether you’re a traditional French press person or prefer a filter coffee machine, you’ll never need to be decaffeinated again. Making your own coffee will help you avoid spending your entire income at Starbucks, so don’t forget to pick up a reusable coffee flask as well for making a cup to go!

    1. Add home comforts

Dorm rooms should have all the basics you need, but sometimes they are in desperate need of a revamp. It can be as simple as adding a patterned throw for your bed or using cushions or vases to add a splash of color. You can find something unique at Goodwill to show your personality.
    designecologist 628402 unsplash
    1. Maximise your storage

That common problem: you have too much ‘stuff’ to fit into your new place and definitely can’t squeeze all your clothes into that tiny closet. Picking up second-hand furniture like shoe racks, bookshelves or a chest of drawers is a cheap way to create a bit more storage space.

Pick up everything you need to head #backtoschool this semester, at Goodwill. While you’re clearing out your room at home, don’t forget to bring any unwanted clothing and other donations to drop off when you visit our store.
